EUROmilling: Mechanical Parts Provider of the Year by Nordinvent
June 4, 2024Enhancing Biogas Production with Fine Milling of Rapeseed Straw
July 29, 2024
At Euromilling, we're excited to share the results of our recent partnership with Linka Energy. Together, we've conducted lab tests on wheat straw to see how different milling sizes affect biogas production. These tests focused on four specific sizes: 2.5mm, 12mm, 25mm, and briquettes. Our goal is to help improve biogas output, making the process more efficient and productive.
Take a virtual tour Straw to Biogas
Why Wheat Straw Matters for Biogas
Wheat straw is a common by-product of farming, and it has great potential for making biogas. However, to get the best results, it's important to prepare the straw properly. The size of the straw particles can greatly impact how much biogas is produced. That's where Euromilling's expertise comes in. By adjusting the milling process, we can optimize the straw to increase biogas yield.
Our Laboratory Tests
In partnership with Linka Energy, we tested wheat straw milled to different sizes to see which worked best for biogas production. Here are the sizes we have tested.
2.5mm Fraction: This fine milling size has a high surface area, which is good for the bacteria that break down the straw in biogas production.
12mm Fraction: A bit coarser than the 2.5mm, this size still has a good surface area
25mm Fraction: This coarser size has a smaller surface area compared to the finer fractions but still produces a decent amount of biogas.
Briquettes: Compacted into dense forms, briquettes are easier to store and transport.
Key Takeaways
Our tests provided valuable insights into how milling affects biogas production. Finer fractions like the 2.5mm size generally produce more biogas because they offer a larger surface area for bacteria to work on. However, handling and operational factors also play a role in choosing the right size.
